RָADIO AWE*

Frequency of human prayer

Like a newborn’s first cry when entering the world, such is primal prayer. An ancient, pre-linguistic voice erupting from our mortal body. Whether expressed through speech, song, shouts or whispers, with swaying bodies and stomping feet, as spontaneous recitation or with silent conviction, prayer is an elemental human behavior available to us all.

At a time when voices of hate, violence, fear and racism hark from all directions, RADIO AWE is a broadcasting station seeking to sound our humanity and create a universal library of prayers and wishes of the heart transcending religion, culture, and language to be digitally transmitted 24/7. We aspire to create an ever-growing database that can be used as a funnel and amplifier of prayer, reaching anyone who wishes to hear them, at any time and place.

The gallery has been designed as a meditative space, a futuristic house of prayer open to the public where visitors can listen to the collective stream of consciousness of prayers already collected, record prayers in the adjacent recording booth, or participate in the weekly prayer and content programs at the gallery.

We invite you to visit the RADIO AWE website, listen to the various programs, record your prayer and take part in this radio station for all of us, regardless of religion, race, gender, language, and age.

* Awe, noun. An overpowering sense of wonder produced by the sublime.

About the gallery

Founded in 2015, The Schecter Gallery acts as a ligament between the immense body of knowledge of Judaism, and the expressive power of the arts. The incantatory phrase Abracadabra, which has its roots in Aramaic (אברא כדיברא), is the guiding light of our ongoing artistic interventions; we explore big ideas that unravel and shape the fabric of our lives through art. We strive to amplify the voice of otherness, and serve as a creative platform for artists from all walks of life to thrive and make their visions heard.

The active and intervenient role art plays in the reality of our lives, is foregrounded in the gallery’s activity and program. This core principle is expressed in the gallery’s cultivation of community ties, complemented by its initiation of events, such as lectures, workshops, and artist talks all based around the talmudic methodology of group learning.

Alongside its quarterly exhibition cycle, the gallery hosts a range of interdisciplinary programs for artists that work at the intersection of knowledge, art, and spirit.
